Austrian Court Orders the Government to Pay for Hitler’s House

BRUNAI – Austria court has ordered the authorities to pay 1.5 million euros to Gerlinde Pommer as a compensation for the house where Adolf Hitler was born. Three years ago, authorities issued a compulsory purchase order for the three-story building, located near the Austria-Germany border. The authorities paid euros 310,000 to the ower, Gerlinde Pommer which was not the right value for the house. Hence, since then she was seeking full compensation for the house.

While deciding the price for the house, the court made the assessment based on the property’s market value and on the importance that it is the place where the Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler was born. The court has given a time-period of 14 days to the Austrian state to appeal the decision. This dispute between Austrian authorities and the Pommer family is not new but dates back a long way.

The Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler was born in the house in Brunau am Inn on April 20, 1889. After the Nazi government purchased the house, it was made the subject of a historic preservation order by Germany’s National Socialist regime in 1938. The house was given to Pommer family in the year 1952 and Gerlinde Pommer took the hold of the house in the year 1977.

Since the year 1977, the property has been rented by the Austrian State and it used it as a daycare center for people with disabilities. However, since the year 2011, it has stood empty after Pommer declined the carrying out of work to improve its accessibility. The family refused to allow the government to sell it but in the year 2016, the state issued a compulsory purchase order in the year 2016. The government forced compulsory purchase order because it wanted to prevent it from becoming a place of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis.

And now, since the court has ordered the government to pay for Hitler’s house, so it would interesting to see how the government would respond to this move of court.
